  1. What are Wiley’s Open Access journals?
    Wiley Open Access Journals publish peer-reviewed, well-designed, well-reported research across a broad range of scientific subject disciplines. All journals allow direct submissions and a number of journals also receive papers that are referred by other Wiley journals participating in the Manuscript Transfer Program.
  2. What are the benefits of publishing in Wiley Open Access journals?
    (a) Prestige - The journals are associated with some of Wiley’s highest impact, most prestigious journals, including those published on behalf of our society publishing partners.
    (b) Efficiency and speed - Referred papers will not require re-writing or reformatting, and swift publication decisions will be made for most papers on the basis of reviews already conducted, further increasing publication speed and reducing work for authors and reviewers. The journals offer rapid turnaround times.
    (c) Visibility - Wiley Open Access Journals will be available on Wiley Online Library, which received 200 Million visits in 2012. With open access papers appearing in search results on this platform (in addition to other platforms), authors can expect incredibly wide visibility for their papers.
    (d) Compliance with open access mandates – Wiley Open Access journals allow authors to retain copyright and publish under a Creative Commons License. All RCUK and Wellcome Trust funded authors may publish their articles with a CC-BY license to comply with funder open access policies.
  3. How do Wiley’s Open Access journals differ from OnlineOpen?
    (a) OnlineOpen is Wiley’s open access option within subscription-based journals. Authors pay an article publication fee to make the paper freely available. For more information about OnlineOpen go here.
    (b) Wiley Open Access journals are fully open access journals publishing both direct submissions and, for several journals, papers referred from other journals published by Wiley. Direct submissions will be rigorously peer-reviewed. Papers referred from other Wiley journals that have already undergone peer review will be considered in the light of the original reviewers’ comments.
  4. What types of research doWiley’s Open Access journals publish?
    The journals publish peer-reviewed, well-reported, well-designed, original primary research papers including studies that make an incremental contribution to the understanding of a field.
  5. Are Wiley Open Access Journals connected with Learned Societies?
    Some of the journals are fully, or partially owned by a learned society and Wiley publish the journal in partnership with them. See our list of society journals. In addition, a number of society journals support Wiley Open Access journals by participating in the Manuscript Transfer Program.
  6. Where can I find more information about one of the Wiley Open Access journals?
    Go to Browse Journals, select the journal which you are interested in and click ‘Journal Information’ to review the journal’s web page.
  7. How do I submit my paper to a Wiley Open Access journal?
    Papers can be submitted directly to the journals through an online submission site. To submit a manuscript, either:
    Go to Browse Journals, select the journal you wish to submit to, and click on the 'submit a manuscript' link to begin the process.
    or
    From any page on this Wiley Open Access website, select the journal you wish to submit to from the drop-down list below the 'submit a manuscript' button in the top right-hand corner of the page.
    Papers may also be referred by editors of other Wiley journals that are supporters of Wiley Open Access journals. View lists of participating journals.
  8. What is the peer review process?
    a) Papers referred to the Wiley Open Access journals following peer review conducted by a supporting journal are considered in light of the original reviewers’ comments. Authors can choose to automatically transfer and submit their paper, along with the related reviews, to the appropriate Wiley Open Access journal editors. Papers do not need to be reformatted.
    b) Once the author has agreed to submit and transfer the paper to a Wiley Open Access journal, editorial decisions will be made in the usual way, ie: accept, accept with minor revisions, major revisions requested, reject.
  9. What is the copyright policy for Wiley’s Open Access journals?
    All articles will be published under the terms of a Creative Commons License. Authors retain the copyright for their work and sign an agreement granting Wiley the rights to publish. Details about the specific license used for each journal can be found here. All Wiley Open Access journals allow authors to comply with funder mandates which require their articles to be published under a CC-BY license.
  10. Are the journals indexed in ISI, Web of Science, and/or PubMed?
    Wiley Open Access journals will deposit all appropriate articles into PubMed Central (PMC) upon publication of an online issue. Once your article is deposited in PubMed Central, they will make it searchable on PubMed as soon as possible. Wiley will also apply for other abstract and indexing services that are appropriate for each journal. Full information about this for each journal can be found on the Journal Indexing page.
  11. Will Wiley Open Access journals have an Impact Factor?
    Not immediately. The journals will be put forward to all relevant abstracting and indexing services, including ISI Web of Science. We aim to publish work of sufficient merit so that each journal will be indexed by ISI Web of Science and therefore become eligible for an Impact Factor in due course.
  12. How can I read articles in the Wiley Open Access journals?
    All articles are published on Wiley Online Library and are free to read, download and share. Articles can be accessed from this website using the search box in the top right corner of the page. The search can be run across all journals, or a specific journal. Alternatively, you can go to Browse Journals, select the journal which you are interested in and select ‘Journal Information’ to go to the journal’s web page.
  13. What is the editorial structure for the journals?
    Each journal has an editor-in-chief, associate editors (for some titles) and editorial boards consisting of experts in the fields that are included in the scope of the journal.
    The internal editorial structure includes a publisher, managing editor and editorial assistant to facilitate the publications process.
  14. How are editorial decisions made?
    The editor-in-chief will be responsible for ensuring the overall quality of each journal. He/she will make final accept/reject decisions with support from the associate editors and editorial boards.
  15. How long is the review process?
    The review process varies from journal to journal but all journals aim to have an efficient peer review and production process to facilitate rapid publication.
  16. What are the Article Publication Charges for Wiley’s Open Access journals?
    To cover publication costs Wiley Open Access journals charge an Article Publication Charge. The Article Publication Charge, or APC, is the price an author, funder or institution pays on acceptance for publication of an open access article. Article Publication Charges and vary depending on the journal. Discounts are available for authors of referred papers, members of participating society journals submitting articles directly, and authors from institutions with a Wiley Open Access Account. Payment must be received for the article to be published. Authors will be invited to pay upon acceptance. More information on article publication charges can be found here.

  18. What tools are available to authors and readers of Wiley’s Open Access journals?
    Because the open access journals are published using a Creative Commons license, content is easy for readers and authors to share, especially using social networking tools. Additionally, a suite of post publication tools, such as social networking links is prominently displayed with each article online.
